Hey guys,
I hope you all had a great weekend, I know I did. Sorry for not posting but I was out there living and enjoying myself. I look forward to sharing more with you all this week so I have some awesome posts planned. Today I'm going to talk about something that most of us do but really shouldn't. It's judging a reader by the books they read. I'm guilty of doing this and I'm trying to stop the judging.
There are always those books that people are embarrassed to admit they're reading. I've even read some of them. These are books like Twilight, Fifty Shades of Grey, romance novels, etc. But why do we judge people for reading these books? I've begun to realize that the main reason we're embarrassed to admit to reading these is because of the stigma they get.
The Twilight series was popular before the movies but when the world was bombarded with Edward and Bella the fan base exploded. A huge part of that fan base is screaming teenage girls who wish they had their own vampire boyfriend. Despite the large fan base that doesn't consist of these, the movies have made the series into something that should ONLY be read by teenage girls. So when you're a 20-something or a middle-aged mother, people laugh and judge you for reading them.
A similar phenomenon has happened with the Fifty Shades of Grey series. The books grew immensely popular in a very short period of time. The fact that the books are centered on a man who lives a BDSM lifestyle has made them a laughingstock to some. With the movie being filmed and set to premiere in theaters next February, I can't see the stigma of these books getting any better.
I will gladly admit that I've read both of these series. Yes, I'm not a fan of the Twilight movies and I don't normally read books that involve BDSM, but I read them and enjoyed them. I don't believe we should be judging people by the books they read because something is considered "stupid"to others. I read popular books like Twilight and Fifty Shades of Grey but I also read historial fiction and classics.
So, it's not about what you read, it's the fact that you are reading at all. I think I judge people more if they don't read at all rather than people who read books that are considered embarrassing. Let's all try to make an effort not to judge a reader by the books they read. That's a just a little something to get you all thinking for the week. Happy Monday!
Sincerely,
Erin a.k.a. Bookworm
